York Waterworks Company

A handwritten water quality analysis sheet from 1900s.

About the collection

The archive contains plans, drawings, minutes and recordings relating to the pumping and monitoring of water around the City of York.

There are related papers in the parish archive of York St Cuthbert, including plans of the pipe and conduits in that parish.

The archive was deposited at the Borthwick Institute in 2000, when the Waterworks Company became part of Yorkshire Water, and is accessible in our reading room by appointment.

Why it's important

The archive covers over 200 years of water pumping in York and includes a significant level of detail on water pollution and water quality analysis in the city's rivers and homes.

It helps to illustrate the changing needs of York's population as suburban housing begins to increase, and in the effects of water quality on city centre homes.
