Catherine Muriel 'Kit' Rob
About the collection
The collection contains the papers and correspondence of Kit Rob, noted North Yorkshire botanist and fellow of the Linnaean Society.
The collection was reunited at the Borthwick Institute in 2016-2017, after being split between the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and the Yorkshire Museums Trust after Rob's death.
Access to the collection is by appointment in our reading room.
Why it's important
The papers contain botanical records covering predominantly North Yorkshire, and submitted to Rob in her role as County Recorder for the Yorkshire Naturalists Union.
Her correspondence illustrates a wide-ranging network of contacts from across Yorkshire, the UK and further afield, showcasing a broad spectrum of botanical knowledge.
She was a key part and founding member of several regional and national conservation groups, including the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, Yorkshire Naturalists Trust, Wildflower Society and the Botanical Society of the British Isles.
After Rob's death in 1975, the Catherine Muriel Rob Natural History Society was established as a memorial to her connection to the landscape of North Yorkshire.
The archive includes papers and fieldwork reports, as well as annual itineraries and scrap books detailing the Society's activities.
The Society closed in 2010.
